daft fashion

daft punk is quite fashionable now. i don’t just mean in the sense  that everyone’s hopping on the band wagon, but literally fashionable. with their last 2 outfits designed by hedi slimane of saint laurent, actually appearing on the saint laurent site, to these videos below.

the first was created for the 2013 cfda awards to show the nominees for “menswear designer of the year”–thom browne, michael bastian, and duckie brown; thom browne was the winner.  these male models are singing the lyrics to daft punk’s first single off random access memories “get lucky”.

then earlier today, the robotic duo was spotted in manhattan’s midtown (don’t even get me started on how upset i am that i’m not in town for that) shooting a video with someone who looks a lot like famous model karlie kloss.

random access memories

as the entire internet is abuzz about, daft punk’s new album “random access memories” is dropping may 21. i’m so excited…my favorite band with a disco sound and their new outfits are fittingly all sequinned out courtesy of hedi slimane of saint laurent.  there’s so much anticipation and i love that they’re going back to disco amidst all this freaking edm hype.  watching the collaborators videos about making the album is pretty inspiring too.

i can already tell i’m going to love this album from what’s been teasingly released so far…i mean it’s disco!  and “get lucky” features one of my celebrity crushes, pharrell.  it’s serendipitous that it’s been released on my birthday.  so of course i already pre-ordered it.

i’ve had some great things coincide with my birthday in the past…sun god festival (the only day that ucsd becomes a party school) and shrek 2 (yes, shrek).

this year is the first time i’ll experience having my birthday with final exams and actually have an operations quiz that day. i’d been wanting to a disco theme, and actually even go to a disco, for my birthday but thought nobody would really be into it. but i think daft punk will make things so much easier and actually get people to start liking disco too i think.

thomas bangalter does fashion

the cooler half of daft punk, thomas bangalter, directed a short film for luxury fashion brand co starring his wife elodie bouchez for their spring/summer 2012 collection.

daft punk is no stranger to directing as they released a full length film called electroma before.  they should stick to making music…not that this one was bad.

evolution of style + dance

how cute is this westfield stratford ad?  it combines a bunch of things i like: fashion, dance, couples (i guess?), and videography.

it chronicles 100 years of east london style from the 1910’s until present times.

when i saw this, it totally reminded me of the evolution of dance video (and i wasn’t alone):

and while we’re on the subject of dance…how amazing is david elsewhere?  an oldie but goodie, i can’t help but smile when i watch this:

he’s one of the silhouettes in my favorite ipod ad (break dancing + daft punk? yes, please!):

it’s a shame he never got to perform with michael jackson; they were collaborating for “this is it”…

dancing is one of the (many) things i really wish i was good at.  funny how this turned from a fashion post to dance.

have a great labor day weekend!  i’ll be spending it churning out 8 essays.

daft…coke?!

if you know me, you know i love daft punk.  the past year or 2 has been like daft punk mania because of kanye west’s “stronger”, dj hero, tron: legacy, etc.  there are all kinds of daft punk-related merchandise out there.  adding to all this, coca-cola (the beverage of choice for many) has collaborated with the french duo for limited edition coke bottles.  the set’s called “daft punk x coca-cola club coke” and will be sold at clubs in france and as a collector’s box at colette in paris.  they’ll be released march 2011, when the www.daftcoke.com site goes live.

below is the teaser image.  as you can see, the bottles resemble the famous gold and silver helmets donned by guy-manuel de homem-christo and thomas bangalter to assume anonymity.  i like guy-manuel’s helmet more so it’s no surprise that i prefer the gold bottle.

i personally think the design is too simplistic and lacking.  it’s nice that they kept it refined and sophisticated but the design isn’t very special for a collaboration.  i do like the matte metallic finish though.  and being the sucker i am, i still want a set…so who’s going to france after march and wants to pick up a set for me..??

i have to agree with this comment from stereogum–“I preferred Daft Punk when they made awesome albums instead of sodas, toys, and movie appearances.”

i did somewhat recently acquire these medicom be@rbrick figures:

these are the tron: legacy edition…they also have kubrick (non-bear) and other editions (non-tron).  i was lucky enough to score guy-manuel (left) out of 2 blind boxes.  these are in the artist 21 series; boyfriend scored batman out of his 2 so we got very lucky.  i had to purchase thomas (right) off ebay.  they’re now sitting comfortably on my monitors at work.

other daft punk references in the work space: the tron: legacy soundtrack flier i picked up at the tron night special screening and both dj’s in papercraft form, crafted and gifted by the awesome boyfriend.
