my picks from jason wu for target

well done, target…another designer collection i can get excited about.  in other related news, target is getting rid of their go international collection. i’m really loving the ads so far.  jason wu’s inspiration for the collection is this black cat named “milu”…isn’t she so mischievous?

ok, i could’ve sworn i saw a better scan of this yesterday but this is all i can find now…sorry.

here are the pieces i like so far:

navy poplin dress, $39.99

white sheer blouse with ribbon, $34.99; black circle skirt, $29.99

cream flared dress with belt, $59.99

black lace clutch, $29.99

cream front-flap straw bag, $39.99

milu black cat scarf, $19.99

navy wheel scarf, $19.99

to see the rest of the first look of the collection, with pricing, check out new york magazine’s the cut.  and keep your eyes peeled for when the collection hits stores february 5th.

jason wu shot to fame at the young age of 29 when first lady michelle obama wore one of his gowns for her husband’s inauguration ball.

thomas bangalter does fashion

the cooler half of daft punk, thomas bangalter, directed a short film for luxury fashion brand co starring his wife elodie bouchez for their spring/summer 2012 collection.

daft punk is no stranger to directing as they released a full length film called electroma before.  they should stick to making music…not that this one was bad.

the missoni for target nightmare

so after much anticipation, the missoni for target collection is finally here.  i’ve been eagerly looking forward to and posting about this for some time now and have been at the ready to pounce for today’s launch.  the target style social media team previously said it would go live online to shop at midnight but at the last minute changed it to searchable by 4 am est and shoppable by 8 am est (whatever that means).  i had planned to hit up the brick & mortar store when it opened but when i found out that online would have the most selection and what was being carried at the stories would vary, i quickly changed my strategy.  as of 11 pm pst 9/12 i had been checking in repeatedly and it was discovered you could buy about 11 items though the target mobile site.  nothing i had wanted and with some mob mentality i waited it out until 2 am after a reassuring tweet it would take hours i thought it’d be safe to sleep–or nap rather.  i woke up at 4:30 am only to find that the entire collection was not only already up, but some of my most coveted items, like the loop toss pillow, were already sold out.  i browsed like mad and added anything that remotely interested me into my cart.  unfortunately, it was now about 5 am, or 8 am est, when everyone was expecting the site to go live and the servers crashed.  with 23 items in my cart and not having seen everything, i was locked out.  my friend had been smart and checked out a few times but she had also started earlier.  in my 2 measly hours of sleep, i had missed out.

i waited and waited, watching the facebook and twitter pages like a hawk and constantly refreshed my cart waiting for the site to come back up.  over 3 hours later and still nothing.  finally when the site came back, i made 2 massive orders but it was still a waste of time.  i could’ve slept a full night, gone to work and bought everything i did today without any of the sacrifice i had done.  the items that i wanted that were sold out, had sold out when i had napped, and weren’t back in stock.  and i don’t think anything in my cart had sold out.  i’m sure i’ll be returning a lot later (well, i better be…i spent over $1,000), but i’m happy i got most of the things i had blogged about before, like the martini glasses and tumblers, scarves, and framed art prints.  there was way more online than what was shown in their supposedly complete look book and now as i blog, i realize i didn’t check out the stationery items at all.  i didn’t see a category for it.

anyways, onto the gains and losses.  not shown in the look book, but my very favorite purchase so far (i hope saying that doesn’t jinx me and get it canceled):

isn't it gorgeous?! ::swoon::

i bought this quickly as i didn’t want the site to crash again and thought it was pretty cute.  after i finished checking out, i was able to look at the detail photo and i’m blown away but how nice it looks.  i really hope it comes with everything pictured and is as nice as it looks in the photo.

this is the best photo i could find since target crashed again.  i’ll update it later. ETA: UPDATED!

and here are the shaker and pillows i wanted but failed to get:

martini shaker.

toss pillow in colore loop. i want you so bad!

multi pillow set in red medallion. online only.

ok, seeing as how i only got 2 hrs of sleep and am pretty pathetic, i’m going to bed now.

evolution of style + dance

how cute is this westfield stratford ad?  it combines a bunch of things i like: fashion, dance, couples (i guess?), and videography.

it chronicles 100 years of east london style from the 1910’s until present times.

when i saw this, it totally reminded me of the evolution of dance video (and i wasn’t alone):

and while we’re on the subject of dance…how amazing is david elsewhere?  an oldie but goodie, i can’t help but smile when i watch this:

he’s one of the silhouettes in my favorite ipod ad (break dancing + daft punk? yes, please!):

it’s a shame he never got to perform with michael jackson; they were collaborating for “this is it”…

dancing is one of the (many) things i really wish i was good at.  funny how this turned from a fashion post to dance.

have a great labor day weekend!  i’ll be spending it churning out 8 essays.

harry-potter-inspired

with harry potter & the deathly hallows part 2 opening in just a week and some change (squeal!), college fashion put together a beauty post inspired by the 4 different hogwarts houses.

gryffindor

ravenclaw

slytherin

hufflepuff

and a couple from the characters:

hermione granger

luna lovegood

bellatrix lestrange

for explanations of how to effectively capture “the look”, check out their post.  they’ve also done some harry potter-inspired fashion posts before:

GRYFFINDOR

RAVENCLAW

SLYTHERIN

HUFFLEPUFF

this will help me think of what to wear when i go to that harry potter tribute art exhibition (yes, i’m going!  i don’t care!).  i won’t be wearing a costume although it will probably be relatively easy for me to pass as cho chang.  especially since i like blue, ravenclaw, and those shoes in the formal look are a knock-off of the christian louboutin canon 140’s i’ve been lusting after.

i think i would’ve liked to be in ravenclaw out of all the houses even though our heroes are all in gryffindor.  my favorite characters were sirius black (gryffindor) and severus snape (slytherin).  i can’t wait until i’m done with all this bschool nonsense so i can get down to what really matters–reading harry potter again.

versace for h&m preview

the highlight of yesterday’s versace men’s show at milan men’s fashion week actually had nothing to do with the men–it was donatella versace herself, taking a bow, in a versace x h&m dress.

this may come as a surprise, since she has previously stated in a 2008 new york magazine interview, that although she respects other big designers for collaborating with mass market chains to create an affordable line, that she wouldn’t do one herself, “because i work very hard to put the versace line in the luxury section.  i think to put the versace line in h&m would confuse the brand.”  perhaps, to avoid the confusion, it’s being billed as “the iconic collection” rather than a diffusion line.  this will go nicely with the deal versace struck with lady gaga, winner of the cfda’s 2011 fashion icon, to wear only versace in the next several months.

when asked about the collaboration,  donatella said, “I am thrilled to be collaborating with H&M and to have the opportunity of reaching its wide audience.  The collection will be quintessential Versace, perfect for H&M and Versace fans everywhere.”

“Versace is one of the most important brands of recent times and their collection for H&M will be glamorous and flamboyant – everything Versace stands for. Donatella Versace is sharing with us iconic designs from the archives. This is such a celebratory collaboration and is perfect for the festive season,” says margareta van den bosch, creative advisor at h&m.

donatella will raid the archives of the fashion house that was originally started by her brother gianni in 1978 and reinterpret the designs for today.

the collection will roll out first on november 17th (in 300 stores & online) with women’s (around 40 pieces), men’s (around 20), and home collections.  followed by a pre-spring collection on january 19th exclusively in countries with h&m online sales (austria, denmark, finland, germany, holland, norway, sweden, and the uk).

per the h&m press release:  “The womenswear collection will be dominated by dresses that express the spirit of the [awards] season, featuring studded leather, silk and colorful prints, and accessories including high heels and costume jewelry. The men’s collection will focus on sharp tailoring, including the perfect tuxedo, as well as belts and jewelry for men. For the first time in a designer collaboration at H&M, the collection will include homeware pieces including pillows and bedspread.”

justin hollar captures target’s go international for marie claire

so…remember my post about target rereleasing previous dresses from some of their most popular go international designer collective collections?  i touched on the importance of good photography and models; and just look at how good these pieces look now when photographed by justin hollar in marie claire‘s march issue in their “101 ideas:  fashionomics” section!

left: tie-dye thakoon dress, $39.99; right: proenza schouler bustier dress, $44.99

left: luella plaid dress, $44.99; right: rogan leopard-print dress, $44.99

what a difference that makes!

club monaco spring 2011

what a cute campaign!  photo booths are so much fun.  the campaign was shot by ryan mcginley for the club monaco spring 2011.

gucci fall 2011 strikes up my disco fever

i’m not a big fan of gucci, but oh man, the runway collection that was unveiled at milan fashion week is giving me goosebumps and shivers (no, i’m not even joking).  the 70’s are back in fashion and frida giannini is taking disco glam to the next level.  the 70’s motif is looking luxe and not at all cheesy or dated.  i love me some fur…and oh was there fur.  combined with rich jewel tones and a dash of skintight leather–i’m in love.

:: following photos from the sartorialist ::

:: following photos from fashionologie ::

i don’t think i’ve been this excited about a runway collection since christopher bailey’s spring 2010 collection for burberry prorsum.

just because it’s fall/winter doesn’t mean you can’t have some color.  gucci proved that with its well-received collection, saturated with color.  i love the tailored cuts,  flowing fabrics, and silhouettes.  i’ve been wanting some wide-leg trousers for a while…now i feel a sense of urgency.  well done, frida…well done indeed.
