4.4.8

i found this article on the cut about a designer with a really unique marketing strategy pretty interesting.  mark tallowin, a tree-surgeon-turned-artist and leather craftsman, came up with a plan called the “4.4.8 experiment” where he’d make 4 bags, give them to 4 influencers in the fashion industry for a week, gather their feedback and have them pass on the bag to a person of their choice, for 8 weeks. at the end of the experiment, tallowin had 32 fashion insiders who had not only received the bags and provided their valuable input, but were also seen carrying the bag everywhere and wrote personally about the bags for his blog documenting the experiment.

it’s also pretty cool that he produces all bags in very limited quantities because he oversees the entire process. and he wants it that way–he wants each bag to be made by one person from start to finish, from selecting the hides all the way to shipping.  i particularly love this quote:

I may train up an apprentice at some point, but I’m quite happy staying small. I think designers become very keen to say, “I’m turning over a huge amount and I’m stocked in 500 shops worldwide” — but then they become a manager in their own company. If I wanted to be a manager, I would have done something else. I love making handbags and I get a huge rush when a customer e-mails me to say, “I’ve just seen it — I love it.” It’s the biggest buzz.

tallowin, mark tallowin, split edge, kettle bell, flat iron, ink well

the full collection: split edge, kettle bell, flat iron, ink well (top to bottom)

i particularly like the kettle bell and flat iron bags. i think the flat iron would make a really nice work bag. i’m also a big fan of the story behind the names of each one.

i’m rooting for this underdog in the luxury industry…i hope mark doesn’t lose sight of his passion for craftsmanship and his business continues to grow.

parallel universes

prada is such a fun brand.  they’ve teamed up with illustrator vahram muratyan, famous for his blog-turned-book paris vs. new york (which has been on my wish list i might add), to promote their spring/summer 2012 collection in something called “parallel universes”.

parallel universes is a virtual road paved with prada 2012 spring/summer men’s and women’s accessories, which highlights through rapid and intuitive movements two parallel universes that meet under the auspices of prada style.

for the campaign, a microsite was launched yesterday and prada’s really trying to improve its digital presence (the site’s mobile-optimized).  muratyan’s illustrations are animated as gif’s and juxtaposed with photos of the actual products each image features.

visit the microsite.  this one’s my favorite:

my picks from jason wu for target

well done, target…another designer collection i can get excited about.  in other related news, target is getting rid of their go international collection. i’m really loving the ads so far.  jason wu’s inspiration for the collection is this black cat named “milu”…isn’t she so mischievous?

ok, i could’ve sworn i saw a better scan of this yesterday but this is all i can find now…sorry.

here are the pieces i like so far:

navy poplin dress, $39.99

white sheer blouse with ribbon, $34.99; black circle skirt, $29.99

cream flared dress with belt, $59.99

black lace clutch, $29.99

cream front-flap straw bag, $39.99

milu black cat scarf, $19.99

navy wheel scarf, $19.99

to see the rest of the first look of the collection, with pricing, check out new york magazine’s the cut.  and keep your eyes peeled for when the collection hits stores february 5th.

jason wu shot to fame at the young age of 29 when first lady michelle obama wore one of his gowns for her husband’s inauguration ball.

just. wow.

kelly wearstler’s accomplished quite a bit–playboy “playmate of the month”  turned big time interior designer and now, fashion designer as of spring 2011.  of course, being married to brad korzen of viceroy hotel group doesn’t hurt either.  my company has worked with her studio on a few viceroy properties and i’m especially a fan of the the 7th floor of department store bergdorf goodman.  i forgot to visit the last time i was in nyc, but i will make sure to go this february when i’m there.

she’s really translated her hallmark whimsical style into fashion apparel successfully.  but her marketing team especially is doing a fantastic job.  the  upcoming look book shot by jamie beck of from me to you fame featuring kelly framel of the glamourai notoriety in malibu is just stunning.

i apologize for the many photos, but there are a lot.  and there are so many good ones.  and what would a nod to jamie beck be without a cinemagraph?

and speaking of jamie, how cute is this post on her other half?

wishful thinking

some of my personal favorite holiday gift ideas.  these will go over well if the recipient is anything like me, or specifically–me.
